Historical Sketch:  John F. Knight and other plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of the black citizens of Alabama and the students, faculty, staff, and administrators of Alabama State University (ASU) and Alabama A&M University (A&M). They charged that the State of Alabama, its education related agencies and most of its four year public universities have maintained structures, policies, and practices that continue to promote segregation in its university system. 
In December 1991, the court ordered the defendants to modify policies and practices so as to encourage the integration of historically black and historically white schools.

Scope/Content Note:  The Knight v. Alabama collection documents the participation of the ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé State University System in the proceedings. It contains case documents, evidence, and compliance and consent decree documentation.
