Organizational Sketch: The Creative Writing Club was started in 1992 by Dr. Brenda Ameter and Fred Feagin, both English professors at the ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé State University Dothan Campus. Dr. Ameter held the meetings in her home on a monthly basis and encouraged students and non-students alike to attend. Only students could be elected as officers. The club also started an annual literary collection called Copper Blade Review.
The "Copper" stand for "Wire" and "Blade" stand for "Grass"--an interpretation of the Wiregrass, the area from which the creative writings were generally collected. The name was suggested by John Corbin at a meeting of the CWC when the club first considered publishing a literary collection. Every fund raising effort from Book and Bake Sales to proceeds from CBR book sales went back into the CWC.
Approx. 1995, Dr. Ameter and others incorporated Copper Blade, Inc as a non-profit
so they could publish the book, sell it and have a non-profit number and status. There
have been 9 editions, (1995 – 2004), with 2004 being the last issue. Sue Riddle Cronkite
was the publisher/editor, followed by Chris Bryant.
Following the retirement of Dr. Ameter and Mr. Feagin, the roles of faculty included
Dr. Marty Olliff, Chris Bryant, Dr. James Ortego, and Jason Griggs. The club revived
in 2012.
Scope / Content: Contains the Creative Writing Club's money-making projects, correspondence workshop minutes, Newsletters, meeting minutes, announcements, retreats, conferences, contests, competitions, membership rosters, charters, presidents' responsibilities, donations for campus swings, newsletters from fellow creative writing clubs, various publications, and financial records, as well as the newsletters, submissions, editing copies, finished publication copies, guidelines for submission, grant applications, applications for an ISSN number(serial number for publications), invoices, finances and various tax documents for the club's journal, The Copper Blade Review.
Organization: Organized into two series: 1. Creative Writing Club Business Files; 2. Copper Blade Review.
Processing: Received as vaguely labeled/unlabeled files and loose papers. Order imposed by AWHC processing staff.
