Organizational Sketch: The "Alabama School Code" of 1919 established the State Board of Education as well as County and City Boards of Education. Article 3 of the law required the State Board to conduct biennially a census of school-aged children in the state (by county and city, ages 6-21), and empowered the State Board to create uniform financial, enrollment, attendance, and biennial census forms for use throughout the school systems of the state, as well as to conduct "investigations relating to the educational needs of the State, and the means of improving educational conditions."
The School Code of 1939 directed the State Superintendent of Education: (1) to make an inventory of all school buildings and sites; (2) to cooperate with county and city boards of education in securing Federal grants to assist in school building construction by making special studies of school building needs on the request of local school authorities; and (3) to make special studies presenting the need of public education in AL for general Federal aid for the support of the public schools.
Scope / Content: These records reflect the examination of school systems at the county and city level
by the Alabama Department of Education. Each survey, whether for a county or city,
covers three areas. The first area is child accounting, including school census, enrollment,
average daily attendance, and holding power. The second area is the present school
building and sites. The third area is attendance area and recommendations for each

Contains Full & Partial Surveys for school systems in Alabama's Wiregrass Counties:
Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston & Pike, as well
as proposed centers for "colored schools," building plan evaluations, feasibility
studies, analysis of junior high schools, facility evaluations, and proposals for
school consolidations.
Organization: Arranged alphabetically by county and then arranged chronologically within each county.
Provenance: Surveys completed in accordance with the laws of Alabama, 1919 and 1939, acquired by the Alabama Department of Archives and History. In 2012, to enlarge and support the Pike County Board of Education Records acquired in 2011, the Wiregrass Archives paid for copies of all available reports for the nine counties in its coverage area.
