Biography:

Dr. Dan J. Puckett is a professor of history at ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé and the Chair of the Alabama Holocaust Commission. He received his Ph.D. at Mississippi State University and is the author of In the Shadow of Hitler: Alabama’s Jews, the Second World War, and the Holocaust, published by the University of Alabama Press.  Dr. Puckett joined ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé in 2005.

He has written widely on Southern Jews, Alabama history, and the Holocaust. His work has appeared in publications such as Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Alabama Heritage, and Southern Jewish History. He is currently working on a study of African American responses to the Holocaust and its impact on civil rights. 

As a distinguished historian and an expert on the Holocaust, Dr. Puckett has lectured across the country on the American and southern responses to the Holocaust, and he has been appointed by Alabama’s State Board of Education to the Alabama Social Studies Course of Study Taskforce to assist in revising the state’s K-12 Social Studies curriculum and standards.

He has been president of the ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé Faculty, a past president of the Southern Jewish Historical Society, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Historical Association, the Association of Alabama Historians, and the Association of Holocaust Organizations. He has previously held the Starkoff Fellowship at the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and just recently held its Rabbi Theodore S. Levy Tribute Fellowship.
