Sports Psychology - A Growing Field

With the massive interest and growth of sports in the United States and around the world, the field of sports psychology is growing rapidly. Sports psychologists are now a part of every major professional sports organization and most every Division I NCAA athletic program. As sports continue to grow in popularity, this trend is estimated to continue into lower levels of college athletics and high school/youth sports as well. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), there is a growing demand for sports psychologists due to the rising issues of mental health, violence and activism in sports.

Faculty Profiles

Tyler D. Martin, Ph.D., CSCS

Tyler D. Martin, Ph.D., CSCS

Dr. Tyler Martin earned a Ph.D. in Human Performance with an Exercise Physiology Emphasis from The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), a M.S. in Human Performance with an Exercise Science Emphasis from USM, and a B.S. in the field of Physical Education with an emphasis in Fitness Management from Mississippi State University. In addition, he holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Dr. Martin is currently in his 16th academic year as a teacher in higher education, with the past 15 years being at ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé.

J. Brandon Sluder, Ph.D.

Dr. J. Brandon Sluder serves at ÎÞÂë¾ÞÈé as professor and department chair in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion. He received his Bachelor's degree in Sport Pedagogy at the University of South Carolina in 2001 and his M.S. (2003) and Ph.D. (2008) in Sport Pedagogy from Auburn University.
